This was a rather interesting weekend -- I have a few things to share. I could have stretched it into three separate posts .. but its Monday and I’m being lazy –- so deal with it.

Sunday Night Live
Last night Lisa and I went to the “Stars of Saturday Night Live” at the Ryan Center down on The University of Rhode Island campus.

The show in the end was very funny, but not like Dave Attel funny or Dave Chapelle funny (who’s third season has been delayed for some unknown reason) where you’re getting shredded by one liners and relentless seat wetting jokes.

The show featured SNL comedians Darrell Hammond, Seth Meyers and Keenan Thompson (from Goodburger and Fat Albert fame). Not a pure stand up comedian in the bunch and it almost seemed like they were playing skits of a stand up comedians. They all did some voices, told a few SNL stories we all had some laughs .. it was a good time.

But when Darrell Hammond (headliner) hit the stage we were all instantly overwhelmed with the smell of Gin. Hammond was completely hammered for the entire duration of the show, I kept wondering when he was going to pull a gag fall and get up and let us all know that his drunk act was just a joke -- that never happened.

Instead we were treated to about an hour of slurred words, stumbling, incoherent rambling and absolute randomness. In the end I think we all got what we paid for .. we all laughed pretty hard if not with him .. at least at him.

The show time on the ticket stated 8:00pm but the show didn’t start until a good 45 minutes after that. Keenan Thompson made some joke about Hammond’s driver getting “lost” on the way to the show, but maybe Hammond was “lost” in a bar before the show.

Tom Brady signs contract extension with the Patriots
Well its no surprise to anyone that Brady signed an extension to his remaining 2 year contract but I think were all glad to see that Brady will be a Patriot until 2010!

NFL contracts have been recently getting a lot more complex recently as teams try to do whatever they can to lower a players “cap number” but still give that player what he wants. Brady’s deal was just that –- in the end it looks like a 6 year 60 million dollar deal (10 million a year) but that is after all the signing bonuses, random salaries and expected incentives.

Brady signing for about 10 million a year is insane .. if he had have hit the open market he could have easily gotten close to double (if not triple – see Ron Mexico’s contract) that figure from a team trying desperately to fill the empty seats and win games.

I also heard some national talk radio guys (idiots) slamming the Patriots for not “spending a lot of money” on Brady expecting that they should have spent a lot more on him and other players. That theory of team management seems to be doing very well right now guys. (see the Yankees)

Because the Patriots install such a team mentality, players look at the whole rather than the individual (see Basketball) and sign a contract that will suit his financial needs but doesn’t diminish a teams ability to win.

Because as I envision it, Brady is such a team player he gladly signs a contract which is somewhat “thin” so his team will have more cap room to play with and in the end, giving him a chance to further engrave his name as Football’s Greatest QB ever!

If a team doesn’t have to spend 20% of the total team salary cap on their star QB, they can go out and sign great linemen to protect him and great targets for him to throw to.

On a somewhat related note the “Three Games to Glory 3” has landed and the consensus is -- its “fucking awesome”

The directors do a great job getting candid film angles, commentary and audio of each of these unbelievable victories. I highly recommend spending the $40 something bucks on this double DVD jammed packed with special features.

The Celtics
Suck.

They had a somewhat decent season which ended in a absolutely pitiful loss to the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night. They looked like 5 ball hogs trying desperately to score points – rather than a team of talented players playing together. But to their defense, this is the NBA -- You are lucky to get two players to play as a team never mind all 5 players. This is the exact reason I dislike Basketball.

Very disappointing -– the city of champions expects more than that.
