Red Sox crushed in season opener, REO Speed Wagon found in yellow pages.
Posted on April 03, 2007 in SportsWow, 2007 is off to a rocky start as the lowly Royals whittled a prison shank out of a melted fork and stuck it into the back of the Red Sox yesterday. When washed up rockers REO Speed Wagon sings your national anthem to kick off the season, that can’t be a good sign of things to come.
It’s was a whacky off season – finally the Sox took a page out of the Yankees handbook and started handing out blank checks to top flight free agents. It seems like they filled many holes in the lineup, but did they really?
This team is full of questions still -- not answers. The starting pitching looks a lot like last year except the addition of Matsuzaka. Can the addition/replacement of one pitcher bail out last years sinking ship?
Then you sign the 70 Million Dollar Man with a glass jaw in JD Drew. He had a good spring training and if can stay healthy will be a great addition after David Ortiz in the lineup – but can he stay healthy?
Lugo is a downgrade from Alex Gonzales at short defensively, but surely should be able to best Gonzales’ anemic .150 batting average – but is he worth 9 million and a defensive loss?
Coco Crisp is still having nightmares about Captain Crunch stealing his Lucky Charms.
There is a green as grass rookie whom (Dustan Pedroia) playing 2nd whom made a base running mistake yesterday, although he did have two hits I chalk that up to opening day jitters.
Manny will be Manny, Ortiz will be the man, Shilling will blog and all The Dirt Dogs are gone and the questions will continue to fester.
There is no tougher division in Baseball with the Yanks and Jays breathing down the Sox neck – we are surely in for a long summer.

First off... GO JAYS GO!!!
Second, just remember that it's only one game, and there are 161 more to go. You can't give up hope just yet (even thought we all know that the Sox are gunna finish behind the Blue Jays again this season ;)).
I for one am very curious to see how Matsuzaka fairs this season. When a team goes out and spends a bagillion dollars just for the rights to TALK to a player... he's gotta be pretty good... right?
The fact that they lost (or even won) that first game does not change the fact that there are a lot of questions on this team.
And also remember that the sky has fallen on our collective heads (as red sox fans) for 86 years. Pessimism is the only life we know.
Hah! Fair enough :)
